Himalaya Film Days are presented by the Society of Himalayan Cultures, an independent non-profit organization with an aim to create awareness of social and cultural issues of the Himalayas in order to promote cross-cultural understanding.
With the Himalaya Film Days, we intend to show films and documentaries with a cultural sensibility and provide the general public with a special insight into the region. We explore lesser known issues, new outsiders’ perceptions of the region, as well as fresh streams of self-reflection in cultures and communities of the Himalayas - the event will also promote filmmakers and artists from the Himalayan areas. This year the event will feature a cultural programme of music and visual art.
Besides screening the films and cultural events, we are deeply interested and connected to the preservation, restoration and conservation of the architectural and art heritage in the areas of Tibetan and other Himalayan cultures. Being aware of the uniqueness of this kind of work in the Himalaya and difference on its technical, esthetical and ethical levels from similar work in Europe, we are planning to invite professionals who have been working in this field in the Himalayas for a few decades and have collected the precious expertise and experience. We are organizing the series of workshops for interested experts and lectures for the wider public on the cultural and spiritual issues of this experience.
We are international team based in Tallinn, Estonia which is made up of professionals and students of visual studies, filmmaking, media, Ladakh and Tibetan studies, history of art and anthropology. One of our genuine intentions is to bring different mentalities and minds to better mutual understanding and valuing.
